Extracting cancer cells with magnetic nanoparticles Arstechnica.com - July 10 Since magnets can function through intervening space and material, magnetic nanoparticles may be the solution to capturing cancer cells. Researchers at the GEORGIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY investigated the biomedical potential of magnetic nanoparticles for treating ovarian cancer and published their results in July in the Journal of the American Chemical Society. New titanium coating improves joint replacements Research at Georgia Tech shows that coating a titanium implant with a new biologically inspired material enhances tissue healing, improves bone growth around the implant and strengthens the attachment and integration of the implant to the bone. Research reveals factors that affect organic-based device efficiency Organic-based devices, such as organic light-emitting diodes, require a transparent conductive layer with a high work function, meaning it promotes injection of electron holes into an organic layer to produce more light. Hurricane Season Getting Longer Live Science - July 14 Hurricane seasons have been getting longer over the past century and the big storms are coming earlier. Further, the area of warm water able to support hurricanes is growing larger over time. The Atlantic Ocean is becoming more hurricane friendly, scientists say, and the shift is likely due to global warming. A study by a team of climate scientists found a five-day increase in season length per decade since 1915 ... Peter Webster of GEORGIA TECH put a finer point on it. "There is some work that says that the length of the North Atlantic hurricane season has become longer as SSTs [sea surface temperatures] warm up more quickly early in the season," he said.
